Writer-director Martin Romanella grew up in Buenos Aires, studying music, sculpture and photography from an early age on. Even well before his film studies at Buenos Aires University, Romanella had been avidly working his way up the camera department of major South American productions. He later completed his graduate studies at New York University, and transitioned into directing music videos.
In 1998, the Argentinean Film Council, INCAA, granted Romanella a production award to direct “Candela”; a film that gained international recognition at the London, Clermont Ferrand, Los Angeles and Rotterdam International Film Festivals. The rights to “Candela” were sold to Canal+, France. Martin Romanella went on to direct Sirokh Film’s “As, As In”, which won him the Ken Russell Award at London’s Clerkenwell Festival.Romanella relocated to Europe in2002, following his eminent success there.

He wrote his next film, “Funeral Etiquette”, produced by Germany’s “Zero Film”, while living in Spain. “Funeral Etiquette” received attention at festivals worldwide, and went on to gather numerous nominations, including the “Turner Classic Movie Award” at London Int’l Film Festival. “Funeral Etiquette” won first prize at the Berlinale “Movie of the Week Award” in2004, as well as the “New Directors Award” at the FIAP in 2005.
During the three years he lived in London, Martin was represented by renowned Reel Creatives, directing music videos and fiction in over fifteen countries; from Gambia to South of Italy. His feature film project “Ciudades Dormitorio”, for which he has been awarded a developing grant from the Argentinean Film Council and additional development funds from Rotterdam Film Festival, is scheduled to go into production next year.
In the fall, Studios Babelsberg, in co-production with Propeller Film Germany, 02 Brazil and Lita Stantic production in Argentina, introduced the picture at IFP New York’s co-production market.Saatchi & Saatchi selected Martin Romanella as their new up-and-coming commercial director, and introduced his work at Cannes Lions2007- New Directors showcase.
Since 2006, Martin has reestablished himself in Argentina and joined production company Argentinacine, where he started directing commercials for Clients such as Coca Cola, Fiat, Cerveza Sol, Pepsi, etc.
